Our History

Tahaddi’s co-founders, Agnès Sanders, a French medical doctor, and Catherine Mourtada, a Swiss educator, first visited Hay El Gharbeh (Southern Beirut) in 1993. Struck by the extreme living conditions and acute health needs, and driven by their personal faith, they began regular visits in 1996, providing basic healthcare and non-formal education.

Relationships of trust slowly began to grow with the community, laying the foundation for what became a registered Lebanese NGO in 2008.

Agnès served as medical director until 2009 and later as a board member and now leads Friends of Tahaddi in France. Catherine has directed the education center since its inception and served on the board from 2010 to 2016.

The Team

Through a team of over 90 specialized staff members, Tahaddi is committed to delivering high-quality programs. Our team includes educators, doctors, nurses, social workers, and mental health, speech, and psychomotor therapists. Community members also play a vital role within our team. Tahaddi promotes lifelong learning through professional development and training.

Tahaddi is governed by a Board of Directors, advised by a General Assembly, and managed by a senior leadership team led by the Executive Director. This team includes technical program leads in education, health, and psychosocial support, responsible for program development, organizational management, and growth.

Our Partners

Tahaddi engages with a diverse range of institutional, bilateral, and individual donors, to whom we are deeply grateful.

Tahaddi has also built strong partnerships with leading Lebanese universities, leveraging their expertise to address educational and health challenges. The Tahaddi Health Center partners with the American University of Beirut’s (AUB) Department of Family Medicine, and Saint Joseph University students in speech therapy and social work undertake training at Tahaddi.

Key Tahaddi donors include Thimar LSESD, Baptist World Aid Australia, the Principality of Monaco, Diaconia, Embrace the Middle East, and the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). The “Friends of Tahaddi” committees in Switzerland and France also play a crucial role in fundraising.

Financials

Tahaddi keeps administrative costs to a minimum, with less than 10% of total expenditure allocated to overhead. The remaining resources are dedicated to program implementation, in alignment with Tahaddi’s mission.
